In this brief audio segment, search analyst Chris Sherman, describes three powerful operators that can be used to increase the effectiveness of a search query.
1. Quoted string operator: double quotation marks ""
This operator forces the search engine to look for the entire phrase in your query in the exact order that you typed it. Using this operator can decrease the number of results that you get by a factor of 10 or more.
2. Exclusion operator: minus sign (-) in most search engines
Example: If searching for Barbara Bush, but don’t want web pages that mention George Bush on them.
Query = Barbara Bush -George
3. Fuzzy operator: tilde symbol (~)
This operator is Google specific and functions almost like a conceptual wildcard.
Example: If searching for pies.
Query =
~pie will return web pages with the words pie, recipe, etc.
